Gift of Feedback
What Did You Learn Today
Every day is an opportunity for personal growth and improvement. Easy to say and tough to do. The challenging part is receiving honest feedback on how you show up and contribute to your company, family, or friends.
While our co-founder Ian Sheridan likes to say, “Feedback is a gift,” sometimes we are not so happy with the packaging! Giving feedback, especially when difficult, clearly and helpfully is critical.
Recently one of our team members struggled with providing feedback to a startup. They were concerned they were being too pushy, yet they felt strongly about the situation. We counseled that it was the right thing to do if done with a thoughtful approach and not trying to make the person wrong. They did it and found the entrepreneur pleased to get the difficult feedback. This person wants to improve continuously and understands hearing feedback, even when difficult, is part of that journey.
Our practice is to discuss what went well and what did not and where we have additional questions. We then provide this to the CEO. We do the same in regular interactions specific to a task at hand at one of the portfolio companies and in our firm.
We recently added a quarterly check-in on critical skills we want the team to acquire over time. Having a regular cadence of check-ins with each other and managers is a great way to learn.
Welcome these interactions and practice providing feedback regularly. Find positive moments to catch others doing well in what they are practicing to learn.
